The Joy of Caring For Your Kusamono

Watering:

In the spring and summer Kusamono need to be watered generally about once a day depending on how warm it is outside. They are prone to drying out quickly due to their small size. They can be watered with a mister or a gentle flowing watering can so the top soil does not run off. If temperatures are inordinately hot or you’ve noticed the pot has dried out quite a bit, the Kusamono can sit in a tray of water. Some Kusamono may not like being waterlogged, so the Kusamono shouldn’t spend too many days in a tray unless it is a water-loving group of plants.

Note: Moss loves getting misted. If your Kusamono has moss on it you may prefer this method because it will keep your moss looking green and healthy.

In the winter most of the native species we use will die back. The Kusamono can be put somewhere protected. Periodically check the pot to make sure it is slightly damp but not soaked, and do not let the Kusamono go through a prolonged hard freeze.

Pruning:

Pruning is an enjoyable necessity for Kusamono. It’s fun to keep your Kusamono looking its best, and removing dead growth ensures that new growth can thrive. Dead leaves can also smother moss and give it a dingy look, so keeping the moss debris free is important.

Feeding:

Your Kusamono will periodically need to get fertilized with a balanced fertilizer, a handful of times starting in early spring and continuing through summer. Liquid fertilizer is nice because it does not mildew or effect the look of the soil.
